Camp Lejeune Class 23 grads are ready to start their new careers

UA VIP Program | Camp Lejeune Class 23 Grads Are Ready To Start Their New Careers

The graduates of the United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) Camp Lejeune Welding Class 23 are ready to begin their new civilian piping industry careers after they successfully transition out of the armed forces.

As a DOD skillbridge program, UA VIP helps transitioning active-duty service members learn a new skill set in order to gain employment in the civilian sector after they finish their commitment to the military.

Upon transition out of the military, Class 23 graduates are guaranteed placement in a UA-registered apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location.

UA VIP is an 18-week accelerated course where students learn the foundational welding skills taught to them by experienced journeymen instructors. The instructors integrate complex and multilevel practices of the pipe trades industry through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on application.

For instance, student welders learned to closely study and read blueprints and use their advanced measuring skills to make accurate welds and cuts.

Most Camp Lejeune Welding Class 23 participants obtained industry-recognized certifications in oxy-fuel cutting, SMAW plate welding, SPAW and GTAW pipe welding and SMAW pipe spooling.

The graduates will continue their welding careers as they learn how to expertly install, maintain and repair all types of piping systems and perform other work such as joining structural steel brackets and supports for these systems. As a UA welder, they will be exposed to many areas of the construction industry.

The beginning of a civilian career

Students who graduate from the UA VIP Program are rewarded for their investment in the program with guaranteed job placement and direct entrance into the UA’s registered apprenticeship program.

UA apprenticeship programs operate under the earn while you learn model, which means Apprentices earn good wages while they continue to learn their trade both on the jobsite and in the classroom. While in the apprenticeship program, students will quickly begin to qualify for quality health insurance and start contributing to a pension and a 401K for their retirement. Apprentice pay gradually increases as they progress through the program and expand their skill set.

As new UA members, the opportunities for career progression are endless. Starting as an apprentice, the UA provides numerous training opportunities to grow and develop into a highly skilled journey-level worker. Once an apprentice tops out of the apprenticeship program and becomes a journeyman, the career pathway expands further.

Transitioning active-duty service members are welcome to apply for the UA VIP program during their last six months of service.

The UA VIP program offers career training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression, where students learn the basics of installing, inspecting, repairing and maintaining fire sprinkler systems.

There are currently nine programs operating at seven locations nationwide. Serving all branches of the military. Service members stationed at neighboring installations are highly encouraged to apply for the UA VIP program nearest them.
