Camp Lejeune Welding Class 29 halfway through UA VIP program

Camp Lejeune

The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) students in Camp Lejeune Welding Class 29 are halfway through their accelerated training.

The UA VIP program, offered through the DOD SkillBridge initiative, is specifically designed to support transitioning active-duty service members by providing on-base training during their last six months of military commitment.

At this point in their training, Class 29 students have begun the process of selecting the UA Local Union where they will begin their DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program after they transition out of the military.

Marine Lance Cpl. Trong Phan has no prior experience welding, but he knew he wanted to work in construction and has enjoyed the program so far.

“I’m adjusting really well to being in a classroom setting,” Phan said. “I enjoy the structure, it helps me stay focused, organized and on track with my learning.”

Phan is eager to begin his UA apprenticeship and learn more about the trade. He credits his good experience to his instructors, Rachel Lablance and Greg Abrams.

“My experience with the VIP so far has been great,” he said. “It’s been a privilege working with Greg and Rachel. They have been professional and very patient with me since day one.”

After he graduates and transitions out of the military, Phan will relocate to Boston and begin his apprenticeship with UA Local 537

Some Class 29 students will stay in North Carolina to begin their apprenticeships, while others will travel to various parts of Illinois, Texas, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Florida, Wisconsin and California.

More about Welding Class 29

After Class 29 students graduate and transition out of the military, they will be placed at an agreed-upon location where they will complete a five-year apprenticeship.

All UA apprentices earn good union wages as they expand their knowledge of the trade.

After graduates complete their apprenticeship, they will become journeymen, opening the doors for career opportunities and potential for further advancement.

The UA VIP program offers accelerated training in welding, HVACR or fire suppression at the following military bases
