Camp Pendleton Welding Class 45 students discover future apprenticeship placement

Camp Pendleton Welding Class 45 students have reached the halfway point of their advanced training in the UA VIP program.

The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members transition into a rewarding civilian career in the pipe trades.

Class 45 students are taught through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training from journeymen instructors Jason Culkin and David Ramirez.

At this point in their training, Class 45 students have learned where they will begin their UA apprenticeships after they graduate and transition out of the military.

Marine Cpl. Devin Miell heard about UA VIP from friends who went through the program. He has enjoyed his experience so far.

“In such a small amount of time, I have learned so much information that should probably take double the amount of time, but with the amazing instructions and instructors that I have, they make it really easy to pick this stuff up,” Miell said.

Miell decided to join the program because he has always been interested in learning how to weld and heard that welders are in high demand across the nation.

After he graduates from the UA VIP program and transitions out of the military, Miell will relocate to Iowa to begin his five-year apprenticeship with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 125.

Other students will begin their apprenticeships with Local Unions in various parts of Wyoming, Maryland, New York, Missouri, California, Minnesota, Alabama and Texas.

What’s next for Class 45

Before Class 45 students graduate, they will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certificates as well as SMAW and GTAW welding on both plate and pipe.

Graduates can carry these certifications with them when they begin their UA apprenticeship, helping them stand apart from other apprentices on the jobsite.

While working as apprentices, Class 45 graduates will earn a livable wage, along with full-family healthcare and retirement benefits.
