A new group of transitioning active-duty service members have begun training in the United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) as part of Fort Cavazos Welding Class 28.
UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to provide a stress-free transition from the military to civilian life.
For 118 days, Class 28 students will complete training that will provide them with the basic skills necessary to begin their future civilian careers in the pipe trades.
Army Spc. Samuel Garcia was recommended to apply by a friend who recently graduated from the UA VIP program.
“The VIP program stood out to me because it offers training in really interesting trades with a lot of benefits,” Garcia said. “I hope to learn as much as I can to progress my career as a welder.”
After he graduates from the UA VIP program and begins his apprenticeship, Garcia hopes to buy a house for his family and work near Austin, Texas.
During their on-base training Garcia and his other classmates will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that will help them stand apart from other apprentices.
All active-duty transitioning service members are encouraged to apply to the following bases where the UA VIP program is located:
- Camp Pendleton (welding)
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (welding and HVACR)
- Fort Carson (welding)
- Fort Cavazos (welding)
- Camp Lejeune (welding)
- Fort Campbell (welding and fire suppression)
- Naval Station Norfolk (HVACR)
Start a rewarding career
After Welding Class 28 students graduate from the UA VIP program and transition out of the military, they will begin their DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location.
Class 28 graduates will receive a livable wage while acquiring skills through classroom education and on-the-job training while they work as apprentices.
In addition to good wages, apprentices will also become eligible for comprehensive full-family health care and retirement benefits.
