The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program welcomed another class of transitioning active-duty service members interested in training for a future civilian career in the pipe trades.
On June 16, Fort Cavazos Welding Class 30 began its 118 days of accelerated welding training.
The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program created to help active-duty service members smoothly transition from military life to a rewarding civilian lifestyle.
This class marks another step in the program’s mission to provide transitioning military personnel with industry-leading training, job security and a clear pathway to success.
For Air Force Staff Sgt. Brady Porter, the decision to join the UA VIP program was clear.
“Hands-on work with guaranteed job placement” was a major draw, he said, reflecting on the program’s unique value of practical training paired with a direct route to meaningful employment.
During his time in the program, Porter hopes to become proficient in welding and master essential techniques that will set the foundation for a successful civilian career in the pipe trades.
Porter is eager to gain real-world skills that will lead to stable, long-term opportunities.
The members of Class 30 will learn the fundamentals of welding under the guidance of experienced UA journeymen instructors.
Through a blend of classroom learning and hands-on projects, each student will build a strong foundation for their future careers in the pipe trades.
UA VIP graduates are guaranteed direct entry into a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program and job placement with a UA signatory contractor.
While working as apprentices, VIP graduates will earn good union wages and quickly qualify for comprehensive healthcare benefits for themselves and their families.
The UA VIP program offers accelerated training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at the following military bases:
- Camp Pendleton (welding)
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (welding and HVACR)
- Fort Carson (welding)
- Fort Hood (welding)
- Camp Lejeune (welding)
- Fort Campbell (welding and fire suppression)
- Naval Station Norfolk (HVACR)
Individuals interested in joining the UA VIP program do not need to be stationed at one of the bases listed above to apply.
