Future union welders begin Camp Pendleton Welding Class 46

Camp Pendleton

Camp Pendleton Welding Class 46 students have started their on-base training as they prepare to transition from military service to civilian careers through the UA VIP program.

UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members transition from the military into a rewarding civilian career. Class 46 Day 1

Over the next 118 days, Class 46 students will learn the fundamentals of welding skills necessary for a future career as a union welder.

The UA VIP program was recommended to Marine Cpl. Dalik Martinez by a friend and after researching more about the program, he knew it was for him.

“The length of the course and the achievements you graduate with made me want to join the program,” Martinez said.

After he graduates and transitions out of the military, Martinez hopes he will continue to grow his skills during his apprenticeship.

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Sky Weis has prior experience welding and knew he wanted to make a career out of it after transitioning out of the military.

After searching the internet for post-military careers, Weis determined the UA VIP program offered the most opportunities.

Weis plans to continue mastering the trade and eventually become a journeyman and a specialty welder for the UA.

Weis credits welding instructor Jason Culkin for the easy enrollment process.

“The process was very easy thanks to Jason Culkin, who was extremely responsive to all my questions,” Weis said. “He was also extremely easy to get a hold of and would respond to any email or text immediately, which is a far cry from other SkillBridge programs.”

The UA VIP program offers accelerated training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at the following military bases:

From VIPs to Apprentices

Once Class 46 students graduate from the UA VIP program and transition out of the military, they will begin a five-year DOL-registered apprenticeship at an agreed-upon UA Local Union.

VIP graduates will earn good union wages and benefits during their apprenticeships. As apprentices, they will qualify for regular wage increases as they progress and expand their skill set.

The UA VIP program provides free training without using GI Bill benefits, offers the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and ensures direct entry into a UA-registered apprenticeship with guaranteed job placement.

Anyone preparing to transition from the military who is interested in starting a civilian career in the pipe trades is encouraged to apply for the UA VIP program
