The United Association Veterans in Piping Program welcomed 10 new students into Welding Class 16 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

This class began in September and is slated to graduate on Jan. 24.

Throughout the course of the class, Welding Class 16 participants will learn basic welding skills, as they work toward earning welding certifications.

“I think this group is going to do well, as they have started out with a great attitude,” said Kris McAferty, JBLM Lead Welding Instructor.

Having a good attitude is key to doing well it the UA VIP Program, which is a free 18-week career-training program that teaches transitioning service members foundational skills to have a successful career in the piping industry.

For JBLM Welding Class 16 members, a good attitude will go a long way, as they will undergo intensive training – both in the classroom and in the welding lab – to prepare them for a successful career in the UA.

Attitude is not only important in the UA VIP Program, but also important for graduates as they begin working for UA signatory contractors.

To ease the stress of transitioning back to civilian life, the UA VIP Program guarantees employment to military service members who have successfully completed the UA VIP Program and successfully transitioned out of the armed forces.

Since the program’s inception, UA signatory contractors have raved about the intangibles brought to the jobsite by UA VIP graduates. These men and women not only understand the importance, but they follow through and show up to work everyday, on time, listen to superiors and possess a good attitude to do the work.

By having a good attitude, the members of Welding Class 16 are taking the first steps to having a successful career in the UA.

Military service members who are preparing to transition out of the military can apply for the UA VIP Program welding or HVAC-R service technician training at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
