Students in Joint Base Lewis-McChord Welding Class 34 have begun their on-base training as they prepare for rewarding civilian careers in the pipe trades.

Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on learning, Class 34 is building the skills and experience they’ll need to succeed after transitioning out of the military.

UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members smoothly transition from military life to a rewarding civilian career.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Darwin Quinteros saw a poster for UA VIP and after doing additional research he knew it was the program for him.

“I’ve always been interested in welding, but I’ve never had the opportunity,” he said. “The UA VIP program attracted me more than any other program due to its relationship with the military.”

Quinteros is eager to learn more about welding and start a union career.

“My goals for the future include contributing to the community, teaching and sharing what I learn with my peers,” Quinteros said.

For Army Spc. Ryan Doyle, the UA VIP program was the obvious choice for his post-military career.

UA VIP stood out over other SkillBridge programs because graduates are guaranteed a paid apprenticeship right out of the military.

Quinteros, Doyle and their classmates will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that will remain valid when they begin their apprenticeships. These certifications will help them stand out from other apprentices on the jobsite.

The UA VIP program offers 118 days of training in welding, HVACR or fire suppression at the following military bases:

Benefits of the UA

The UA VIP program provides transitioning service members with unique advantages that set it apart from many other career training programs.

Graduates receive direct entry into a UA-registered apprenticeship, ensuring a smooth start to their new career. The program also provides industry-recognized certifications and guarantees employment with a UA signatory contractor.

Participants receive these valuable benefits without using any of their GI Bill.

While working as apprentices, VIP graduates will earn good, union wages and receive quality healthcare benefits for themselves and their families after they transition out of the military.

Transitioning active-duty service members who are interested in a rewarding, civilian career after leaving the military are encouraged to apply for the UA VIP program.
