“I am thoroughly enjoying the program and everything I am learning,” Edwards said. “At times, it can be challenging, but I openly accept the challenges and find the work very rewarding. The instructors are great as well!”

Edwards is impressed that the UA VIP program has provided him the basic building blocks to a welding career without any prior experience and without having to leave the military base.

“The program has been set up to be very easy,” Edwards said. “It makes the transition from the army to becoming a civilian less stressful. There is so much you can learn, and there is always room to grow. I am able to challenge myself and learn something everyday.”

A good paying union job with benefits and job security

The 18-week accelerated training course is provided free to members who have decided to transition out of the military. Participants learn basic welding skills from experienced instructors through a combination of classroom and lab work.

They earn industry-recognized certifications and gain direct entry into a five-year apprenticeship program at an agreed upon UA Local Union nationwide. During their UA apprenticeship, they will earn a livable wage as well as quality healthcare and retirement benefits.

It was those types of benefits that drew Edwards to the UA VIP program.

“I heard great things about the VIP program, including the benefits of joining a union, job security, insurance, pension and much more,” Edwards said. “After the military, I look forward to the learning opportunities, to grow and be involved in a hardworking trade. I am entering into another brotherhood. For that, I’m grateful.”

Anyone in the military preparing to transition out who is interested in the construction trades should learn more about the UA VIP program, Edwards said.

“This is a great program,” Edwards said. “I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to put in the hard work and dedication.”
