UA VIP career skills training begins for Fort Hood welding students

UA VIP career skills training begins for Fort Hood welding students

Some of the students in Fort Hood’s Welding Class 21 have never held a welding torch before.

But by the end of the program, they will have gained a solid understanding of the trade — enough to begin welding careers after they transition out of the military.

The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program is Career Skills Program (CSP) designed to teach transitioning active-duty service members career foundational skills in the union pipe trades in preparation for civilian careers after the military.

Over the course of 18 weeks, the students will learn to weld alongside an experienced journeyman instructor through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training. They will earn industry recognized certifications that propel their career progress and give them a leg up on their peers.

The UA VIP students can earn certifications in oxy fuel cutting, SMAW plate welding, SPAW and GTAW pipe welding and SMAW pipe spooling.

A direct path to a good paying union career

Upon completion of their UA VIP training and transitioning out of the military, the students will enter a UA registered apprenticeship program at an agreed upon location. They will earn while they learn — good union wages with gradual pay increases as they progress through the program. The students will quickly become eligible for quality healthcare for their families. They will start earning a pension and a 401K for their retirement.

Once they complete their apprenticeships, they will become qualified journeymen with numerous opportunities for advancement. The students will enjoy good paying careers that cannot be outsourced in an industry that has a strong demand for jobs.

The UA VIP program offers training in welding, HVACR and fire sprinkler fitting. Transitioning active-duty service members become eligible to apply during their last 18 months of service commitment. Training takes place during their last few months of service at select military bases throughout the country.
