UA VIP Instructor Bootcamp reviews curriculum, training and safety

The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) recently completed its Instructor Bootcamp  at the Hilton in San Diego.

The Bootcamp was designed to bring instructors up to speed with the UA VIP program, its goals and future plans. The group also learned about various safety updates and brushed up on curriculum. They earned certifications to help with their instruction.

The UA VIP Program prepares transitioning active-duty service members with basic skills to begin civilian careers in the pipe trades after the military.

Instructors attended in person, and presenters joined via Zoom and in-person. Overall, about 28 people participated in the conference in an effort to make the UA VIP Program a successful Career Skills Program (CSP).

Instructors reconnected and collaborated on the essentials of UA VIP Program

UA International Training Fund (ITF) Director of Education & Training James Pavesic began the first day training session with opening remarks. UA ITF Training Specialist and VIP Administrator Mike Hazard then explained the goals for the Bootcamp and future plans for the UA VIP Program.

ITF Instructional Technology Coordinator Lauren Friedman talked about setting students up who complete the VIP Program for long-term success as UA Apprentices.

Presentations were given on trades and curriculum. Instructors also took part in a UA VIP Curriculum Development Workshop.

On the second day, instructors participated in the Member Assistance Program (MAP) — mental health training to help instructors assist struggling service members experiencing a mental health crisis.

On the third day, instructors went over UA safety and health updates and recruitment needs.

Lastly, they dove into curriculum, learning about lesson plan strategies, rubrics and assessments for grading. UA VIP instructors also participated in breakout sessions that specialized in their particular trades.

Overall, the UA VIP Instructor Bootcamp proved to be productive in realigning the instructors to the goals, standards and processes of the UA VIP Program, laying the groundwork for another successful year in 2022. It was a vital experience for everyone who participated.
