Dustin Dreckshage is quickly discovering his passion for the pipe trades as he learns new career skills through the United Association Veterans in Piping (UAVIP) Program.

The program offers active-duty transitioning military service members with the opportunity to start a career in the pipe trades through guaranteed job placement with a UA signatory contractor in an agreed upon geographical area and direct entry into the UA’s apprenticeship program.

Dreckshage, who is entering week four of the UA VIP Naval Station Norfolk HVAC-R program, enjoys learning his new trade. He said that one of his favorite aspects of the program is learning something in the classroom and then translating it into practical experience. This style of learning helps him better understand the material being taught in the 18-week accelerated training program.

Like many other UA VIP transitioning service members, Dreckshage said his instructor makes understanding the sometimes complex material easier.

“By using classroom teaching techniques like bookwork and PowerPoint presentations to supplement the hands-on experience, our UA VIP instructor ensures that every learning style is accommodated for,” said Dreckshage.

Besides his new passion for the piping industry, Dreckshage is also grateful the program will help alleviate the stress that often accompanies those seeking employment upon their re-entry into civilian life. A guaranteed job that pays livable wages and great benefits will allow him to focus on what he hopes will be a seamless transition out of the armed forces.

Dreckshage is also looking forward to improving upon the skills he is learning through the UA VIP Program. Upon successful completion of the program, he will enter a five-year UA apprenticeship program. As an apprentice, he will receive additional classroom instruction and on-the-job training to help him become a journeyman. As he advances in his apprenticeship, Dustin will receive pay raises reflective of his increased skillset.
