UA VIP students at Ft. Carson are halfway through welding training

For the last nine weeks, the United Association Veterans In Piping (UA VIP) Fort Carson Welding Class 26 has been learning the fundamentals of accelerated welding in preparation for their future civilian careers.

The Class 26 students are all transitioning active-duty service members who have made a huge step to ensuring a sustainable career will be there for them once their military commitment is fulfilled. 

The UA VIP program is a DOD Skillbridge Program that trains transitioning active-duty service members in the essentials of their preferred trade. For Class 26 students, they have been learning how to install, maintain and repair all types of piping systems. 

Through hands-on training and classroom instruction, they have also been learning how to join structural steel brackets and supports for such systems. 

The students have already obtained some industry-recognized certifications in OSHA Safety training and will continue to earn many more. 

After graduation, the UA VIP program guarantees job placement at an agreed-upon location. Students can choose from UA-registered apprenticeship locations across in the country. 

VIP graduates will move onto a five-year DOL-approved registered apprenticeship program where they will continue to learn the advanced aspects of welding alongside journeyman instructors. 

The program has helped thousands of transitioning military service members find a financially stable and fulfilling career in the pipe trades.

Upon completion of their apprenticeship program, apprentices become journeymen. As a journeyman, multiple careers are possible including foreman, superintendent, UA signatory contractor, business owner, or even a UA officer or organizer.
