Fort Campbell Welding Class 24 students officially halfway through UA VIP program

Fort Campbell Welding Class 24 students are officially halfway through their accelerated training in the UA VIP program.

At this point in their training, students have learned the fundamentals of welding from journeymen instructors through classroom instruction and hands-on training, preparing them for a civilian career in the pipe trades.

The UA VIP program is a DOD Skillbridge Program, created to help active-duty service members transition from the military to civilian life with minimal stress.

UA VIP graduates are guaranteed a job with a UA signatory contractor at an agreed-upon location after they transition out of the military.

Army Staff Sgt. Thomas Bochicchio described his time in the UA VIP program so far as “amazing” and said the instructors and facilities have been great.

“I decided to join the UA VIP program because the benefits of a union are unmatched,” Bochicchio said. “I know it’s hard work and long days but it will all be worth it in the long run.”

The UA VIP program stood out to Bochicchio because it would not affect his GI Bill and would guarantee him a job.

“UA VIP is the best CSP program ever,” he said.

Bochicchio already knows he will begin his apprenticeship with Local 572 in Nashville. Other students in Class 24 will travel to various parts of Virginia, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma, Illinois, Ohio and Califonia for their apprenticeships.

What’s next for Class 24 students

Welding Class 24 students will graduate on Nov. 21. Once they transition out of the military, they will receive good hourly wages and high-quality healthcare benefits as United Association apprentices.

Before they graduate, Class 24 students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that they will take with them when they begin their apprenticeship.

These certifications could include oxy-fuel cutting, SMAW and GTAW welding, OSHA safety and more. As part of their hands-on training, they'll complete a pipe spool project, allowing them to apply their skills to real-world scenarios and learn the fundamentals of pipe fitting.

After Class 24 students complete their apprenticeship, they will become journeymen, giving them more opportunities for career advancement.

The UA VIP program offers training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at the following military bases:
