The members of Fort Carson Welding Class 32 recently celebrated their graduation from the United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program, marking an important step in their transition from military service to civilian careers.
The UA VIP program at Fort Carson is a DOW SkillBridge program open to transitioning active-duty service members within their 180-day transition window. It bridges the gap between military service and a high-demand civilian career, combining structured classroom learning with real, hands-on welding experience.
Class 32 members didn't just learn the basics of welding — they also had the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that will set them apart from day one when they enter their apprenticeship programs.
Where Class 32 Graduates Are Going
UA VIP graduates don't leave the program without a plan. Each graduate works with program administrators to select a geographic area where they will enter a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship. Once they transition out of the military, they know where they will relocate and begin working with a UA signatory contractor.
Graduating members of Fort Carson Welding Class 32 will be heading to:
- Colorado Springs, Colo. — UA Local 58
- Houston — UA Local 211
- Pomona, Calif. — UA Local 398
- Tuscaloosa, Ala. — UA Local 372
Graduate with Guaranteed Job Placement
One of the most important aspects of the UA VIP program is what comes after graduation. Once their military commitment is complete, every graduate is guaranteed a job with a UA signatory contractor and direct entry into a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program — no job searching, no uncertainty.
As apprentices, Class 32 graduates will earn strong union wages from day one, with pay increases as their skills develop. They'll have access to comprehensive healthcare for themselves and their families, and begin building long-term financial security through a pension and 401(k). Upon completing the UA’s five-year apprenticeship, graduates achieve journeyman status, and with it, even greater opportunities for career growth.
The 118-day, 720-hour UA VIP curriculum is designed to give students a genuine head start in welding, sprinkler fitting or HVACR — not just an introduction, but the foundation of a new civilian career.
The UA VIP program offers nine programs at the following seven military bases:
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (Welding and HVACR)
- Camp Pendleton (Welding)
- Fort Carson (Welding)
- Fort Hood (Welding)
- Camp Lejeune (Welding)
- Fort Campbell (Welding and Fire Suppression)
- Naval Station Norfolk (HVACR)
For transitioning active-duty service members considering the program, it is important to note that you don't have to be stationed at one of these bases to apply. Click on the links above for more details.
