Every September, as we celebrate Labor Day and the values of hard work, service and leadership, we are reminded of the extraordinary individuals who embody these ideals in their daily lives.
This year, the United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program is proud to spotlight Sean-Keoni Ellis, who was named Senate District 38 Community Champion of the Month, as an example of what it means to serve, lead and uplift others.
As he neared the end of his service as a Marine Corporal, Ellis faced the same challenges many others encounter: finding a meaningful path in civilian life.
Through the UA VIP program at Camp Pendleton, Ellis discovered a career and a renewed sense of purpose.
The program equipped him with the technical skills and hands-on training necessary to launch a stable, rewarding career as a union welder.
Ellis has built a successful career, rising from apprentice to journeyman welder. He later returned to Camp Pendleton, this time as the lead VIP welding instructor, a position he held for several years.
He became a mentor for other transitioning service members, guiding them through the same life-changing program that shaped his own future. His leadership ensured countless veterans gained the tools, confidence and opportunities to thrive after their military service.
Impact beyond the classroom
Ellis’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. He has taught at the UA’s Instructor Training Program in Michigan, sharing best practices and inspiring instructors across North America.
His advocacy for veterans is well recognized through his involvement with UA Local 230, the San Diego Labor Council and the AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council.
In every role, Ellis exemplifies the UA VIP commitment to empowering veterans, strengthening the labor movement and building a better future for working families.
Ellis credits the UA VIP program with saving his life by providing a new mission and sense of belonging after military service.
Today, he continues to inspire those around him by modeling what it means to live with purpose, resilience and a spirit of service.
The UA VIP community extends its deepest gratitude to Ellis for his leadership, mentorship and unwavering commitment to advancing opportunities for veterans nationwide.
