JBLM Welding Class 33 graduates ready for new careers

JBLM

On July 17, Joint Base Lewis-McChord Welding Class 33 students celebrated their graduation from the United Associations Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program.

The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members transition back to civilian life as smoothly as possible.

Over the last 118 days, Class 33 students learned the basic welding skills necessary to be successful in a UA apprenticeship program. IMG_7622

Among this group is Army Spc. Esmeralda Conde, who will soon transition from active duty to begin her apprenticeship with UA Local 142 in San Antonio, Texas.

Conde developed a passion for welding during her military service, and the UA VIP program gave her the opportunity to turn that passion into a rewarding civilian career.

“I discovered VIP through a CSP brief, and it was my top choice because it offered hands-on welding training and guaranteed job placement,” Conde said. “That security means a lot. People who graduate from VIP don’t leave wondering where they’ll work next.”

Before the UA VIP program, Conde said she had never pipe-welded before and found it more difficult than she expected. The support she found in the UA VIP program made all the difference.

“The way Jeremy teaches and explains topics makes a huge difference, and we practice a lot, so I feel very prepared,” she said.

As the only woman in Class 33, Conde never felt out of place and recommends the VIP program to anyone transitioning out of the military.

The UA VIP program stood out to Conde because it offers more flexibility than other SkillBridge programs.

“I was surprised VIPs can choose where they go for their apprenticeship,” Conde said. “I’ve been away from home for so long and I can’t wait to be back.”

Additional UA VIP info

After transitioning out of the military, VIP graduates are guaranteed direct entry into a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location.

While working as apprentices, VIP graduates earn good wages and qualify for comprehensive healthcare benefits for themselves and their families.

As apprentices continue to learn the skills of the trade, they will qualify for regular wage increases.

Graduates who complete the apprenticeship program will become journeymen. Reaching journeyman status will open the door to more career growth opportunities.

If you are an active-duty service member who wants to find a rewarding civilian career after leaving the military, apply for the UA VIP program today.
