A new cohort of transitioning service members who are preparing for a civilian career in the pipe trades began their accelerated training on Oct. 20 in Fort Campbell Fire Suppression Class 18.
Over the next 118 days, Class 18 students will learn the basics of fire suppression through a blended learning style that combines on-base classroom instruction with hands-on training.
UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members smoothly transition from military life to a rewarding civilian career.
Army Spc. Jonathan Haskins learned about the UA VIP program through the CSP office and after doing additional research online, he knew it was the program for him.
“The guaranteed job and the ability to choose where you will complete your apprenticeship made me want to join VIP,” he said.
Haskins said he is eager to build a strong foundation in the trade and gain an early advantage over other future apprentices on the jobsite.
For Army Spc. Zachary Ward, the VIP program stood out from the other SkillBridge programs because it offers direct entry into a UA Local Union and a steady, stable job.
“I look forward to improving my skills with the tools and expanding my trade knowledge throughout my time in the VIP program,” Ward said.
Haskins, Ward and their fellow classmates will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications in sprinkler hazard, boom lift, OSHA safety and more during their time in the UA VIP program.
